Rep. Lawson and Other House Democrats Fulfill Their Obligation to Protect the Full Faith & Credit of the Country

Press Release

Date: Dec. 15, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Al Lawson (FL-05) along with other House Democrats approved a measure that lifts the government's debt ceiling to avoid the risk of a default. The approval allows for the debt limit to be raised enough to extend the U.S. borrowing authority until November 2022.

Democratic lawmakers made it clear addressing the debt limit is not about future spending, it is about maintaining the government's current obligations.

"It is imperative that we uphold our responsibilities to our citizens including Social Security recipients, Veterans and to the millions of people who benefit from the COVID relief legislation passed in December," Rep. Lawson said. "We owe that to the American people, and it is important that we follow through with our commitments which saves our economy from a catastrophic event."

Protecting the full faith and credit of the United States has long been a bipartisan responsibility of the Congress. Congress has addressed the debt limit nearly 80 times since 1960: 30 times with a Democrat in the White House and 49 times under a Republican president. Additionally, Republicans supported suspending the debt limit all three times that it needed to be addressed in the Trump Administration, when the debt rose by $7.8 trillion.
